Back pain is very common, so much so that over 70% of people will have at least one episode of back pain over the course of their life.

At Pacific Coast Osteopathy we have a lot of experience treating back pain:

  • Diagnosing what the cause of your back pain is.

  • Providing the most effective short term treatment.

  • Creating a long-term management strategy.

What causes back pain?

The most common cause of back pain is due to soft tissue injuries, and most of those occur in part of the spine called an intervertebral disk. (If you’ve ever heard someone talk about a slipped disk, they’re talking about one of these).

Disks are essentially shock absorbers, and because they’re part of our spine they have to be able to move around to do their job.

They’re put together in much the same way as a water-balloon; with a sort of gooey centre (the nucleus pulposus) held in place by an outside ring of ligament (the annulus).

That ring can be damaged in much the same way as a twisted ankle gets damaged when you sprain it, and this can be very painful!
