Is this my first consultation with Pacific Coast Osteopathy?
If this is your first visit with Pacific Coast Osteopathy then we'll take a bit of time to make sure we get to know you, what it is that you'd like us to help you with, and take a detailed medical history to make sure that you're in the right place. That takes about 10-15 minutes usually, and is basically just a chat.
After that we'll run through a thorough examination to determine the most likely causes of what you've come to see us about. This will usually be a combination of movements you perform yourself, movements that we help you with while you relax, and special orthopaedic tests. Some of those movements might be a little uncomfortable, but it's a good thing if they are because it gives us valuable information to help you with.
Finally we'll get to the treatment part which may involve soft tissue work (massage), stretching, gentle articulation of joints, or exercises. In some cases your osteopath may also ask if you're happy with manipulation, or "clicking" a joint. If you're not comfortable with that idea you're more than welcome to refuse, and your osteopath will find another way to help you.

Will I have to do exercises?
In most cases, your osteopath is likely to give you some simple exercises to take home. Your osteopath can only see you once or twice a week, but you get to to see you every day of your life. The more we can help you help yourself, the better we're doing our job. Don't worry though; you're very unlikely to be working up a sweat with anything we're likely to give you.

Will I need more than one visit?
We need to make sure that we've gotten your diagnosis right and that you're improving as quickly as we expect you too, so you can expect at least one follow-up appointment. We will never try to sign you up for an extended therapy program. In most cases you can expect to see us three or more times, but every person and injury is different. If you feel that "you are healed" or osteopathy isn't working for you then you're welcome to discontinue treatment at any time
